Knocked out tooth

Saving a knocked out tooth.

A knocked out tooth is referred to by dentists as an "avulsed" tooth. It constitutes one of the most severe dental emergencies. But yes, your avulsed tooth can be saved! However, you must act quickly and ensure no further damage occurs to the tooth.

A tooth being knocked out also causes damage to the nerves, blood vessels and supporting tissues. Therefore, all avulsed teeth need a root canal. This is because the nerves and blood vessels cannot be repaired. However, there is a strong chance that the tooth's root can reattach to the bone when put back in the correct place.

As the saying goes, you can't go home again. So what goes in your mouth should stay there, unless it's a tooth that's been knocked out by someone's fist. If the tooth is knocked out, bite down on a gauze pad and immediately call a dentist. Act as quickly as possible and reach the dentist or orthodontics in 30 minutes.

After a tooth is knocked out, you know how painful it is. You can't eat, drink and worst of all, you can't smile.

The tooth may rot and cause a cavity if you don't get it treated. Which can lead to tooth loss and tooth decay. And it may take some time before your tooth is fully healed. So if you've been knocked out again, you know the drill, and once again, you need to get it treated.

If a Tooth is knocked Out

There are many Things You Can do to Increase the Chances to Put it Back in Place.

  • Handle the tooth carefully and avoid touching the root;
  • If the tooth is dirty, rinse it with milk (or water) and avoid wiping it with a cloth.
  • If possible, try slipping the tooth back into its place (without using any force).
  • Keep the tooth moist. The best option is to store it in a cup of milk or hold it between the cheek and the mouth's gum.
  • Alternatively, you can spit some saliva into a cup to store the tooth. Or, at the very least, keep it in water.
  • Get to your dentist ASAP!

The actual process of knocking out tooth reattachment varies from case to case. This depends on the level of damage and the time of the removal tooth. But the general process involves the dentist flushing any debris from the tooth socket and slipping the tooth back in. A root canal can be performed either straight away or later on. We will hold the tooth using a splint in place for several days. The repair time may vary from 3-8 weeks, depending on the damage.
