Book an emergency dental appointment in Melbourne

The quickest way to be seen is to call us on (03) 9042 0483. You can also request an emergency appointment online, though phoning is usually faster when you're in pain and want to be seen the same day. When you call, tell us what's happening, whether it's a knocked-out tooth, sudden swelling, a lost crown or a tooth that's keeping you up at night, and we'll book you in. The first step is to book an appointment so a dentist can see what's going on.

Toothache and chipped or broken teeth

A severe toothache that painkillers are not touching needs prompt care; see our toothache treatment page. A sharp chipped or broken tooth is also seen on the day.

When to go to hospital or call 000 instead

If a dental problem is leaving you in real pain, won't stop bleeding, or involves a tooth that's been knocked out or broken, treat it as urgent. These are the problems we most often see on an emergency basis:

  • a severe toothache that painkillers aren't touching
  • a knocked-out tooth (the sooner it's treated, the better the chance of saving it)
  • a broken or chipped tooth, especially a sharp or painful one
  • a dental abscess or facial swelling, which can signal infection
  • a lost filling, or a crown that's fallen out or come loose
  • bleeding from the mouth that won't settle
  • an object stuck between your teeth that you can't remove

Not sure if yours counts? Call and describe what's happening, and we'll tell you whether to come in.

When to go to hospital or call 000 instead

Some situations need a hospital rather than a dental chair. Go to your nearest emergency department or call 000 if you have:

  • facial swelling that's making it hard to breathe or swallow
  • bleeding that won't stop after firm, sustained pressure
  • a head or facial injury with loss of consciousness or a suspected broken jaw
  • a rapidly spreading infection with a fever

For anything else, call Gorgeous Smiles and we'll arrange to see you.

What to do before your emergency appointment

While you arrange to be seen, a few simple steps can help in the meantime.

01

Knocked-out tooth: pick it up by the crown, not the root, and gently rinse off any dirt. If you can, place it back in the socket; if not, keep it in milk or hold it in your cheek. Get to a dentist as fast as possible, because time really matters here.

02

Swelling: hold a cold compress against the outside of your cheek to help reduce it. Don't apply heat.

03

Toothache: rinse with warm salty water and gently floss around the tooth in case food is trapped. Over-the-counter pain relief, used as directed on the packet, can take the edge off.

04

Bleeding: bite down on a clean piece of gauze or a folded tissue with firm pressure.

These are general holding measures to manage things until you're seen, not a substitute for treatment. What's right for you depends on the specific problem.

What happens at your emergency dental appointment

When you arrive, the first job is to work out what's causing the problem and to get on top of any pain. Your dentist will explain what they've found and talk through the options with you before doing anything.

In many cases, emergency dental care is the first stage rather than the whole job. The priority on the day is settling the pain and stabilising the tooth, and any further work, such as a root canal treatment or a new crown, can then be planned for a later visit. Outcomes vary from one person to the next, and your dentist will be straight with you about what can be done now and what's better handled over more than one appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an emergency dentist appointment in Melbourne today?

Call us on (03) 9042 0483 as early in the day as you can, and we'll do what we can to fit you in. Phoning is faster than booking online when it's urgent.

What is classed as a dental emergency?

It's any problem that needs prompt attention, like severe pain, a knocked-out or broken tooth, swelling, or bleeding that won't stop. A lost filling or a loose crown counts too. If you're not sure, call and describe it.

What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?

Hold it by the crown rather than the root and gently rinse off any dirt. If you can, place it back in the socket; otherwise keep it in milk or in your cheek. See a dentist as fast as possible, because the chance of saving it drops with time.

How much does an emergency dentist cost at Gorgeous Smiles?

It depends on what your tooth needs, so the cost is confirmed once a dentist has examined you. Interest-free payment plans are available (subject to terms and conditions).

Do you offer payment plans for emergency dental treatment?

Yes. Interest-free payment plans let you spread the cost through trusted providers such as Afterpay, Zip Money and humm(subject to terms and conditions)

Where is your emergency dentist in Melbourne located?

We're at 121 Exhibition Street, Melbourne CBD 3000, a short walk from Parliament Station and the Free Tram Zone tram stops on Collins and Bourke Streets. Paid parking is nearby at the InterPark and Safe City car parks.

When should I go to hospital or call 000 instead of a dentist?

Call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department for swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, bleeding that won't stop, a head injury with loss of consciousness, or a suspected broken jaw. For other dental problems, call Gorgeous Smiles.
