What is a dental bridge?

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is dental restoration designed to fill the gap created when you've lost one or more teeth. Essentially, it consists of "abutment" teeth on either side of the gap (these receive crowns) with one or more artificial teeth called "pontics" attached between them to span the missing tooth space.

There are different types of dental bridges. Traditional bridges use crowns on both sides of the gap and a pontic in the middle. Cantilever bridges use supports on one side only, while a resin bonded bridge (also known as a "Maryland") uses metal or ceramic wings bonded to the back of the the adjacent teeth. There are also implant supported bridges, where implants serve the support rather than the natural teeth. The choice of which type of bridge is right for you will entirely depend on the health and position of your adjacent teeth, bone structure, and your overall oral health.

A dental bridge may assist with chewing function, speech, and reducing the risk of neighbouring teeth drifting out of position. Whether a bridge is appropriate for your situation depends on individual clinical factors and will be assessed at your consultation. At your initial consultation, your dentist will assess which type of bridge is best for you, considering factors such as the number of missing teeth, the condition of the neighbouring teeth, and whether implants might be involved.

How much does a dental bridge cost in Melbourne?

The cost of a dental bridge depends on the type of bridge selected and the number of teeth that need to be prepared.

What Are the Different Types of Dental Bridges?

There are four main bridge types. Your treating practitioner will advise which, if any, is appropriate for your clinical situation.

1. Traditional Bridges

These traditional fixed bridges are the most common type. They consist of one or more artificial teeth being “bridged” between two abutment crowns on either side.

This kind of bridge is secured by dental crowns, which can be created from various materials and fastened to the neighbouring teeth.

2. Cantilever Bridges

This type of bridge is like traditional bridges, with one or more false teeth hanging between two crowns called abutments.

However, with this type, the abutment only exists on one side instead of both. This bridge works best in areas of the mouth that only experience minimal force when chewing, such as the front teeth.

3. Resin-Bonded Bridges

These bridges comprise two crowns called abutments and a fake tooth or teeth hanging between them. The false tooth or teeth are affixed to the real teeth on either side by metal wings.

Even though these bridges are usually less expensive than regular bridges, they can't be used everywhere. They need to be put in places where chewing force is light.

4. Implant-Supported Bridges

This type attaches one or more artificial teeth to implants placed in the jawbone. It can be used where multiple teeth are missing. Suitability depends on bone density and individual clinical factors.

How Do Dental Bridges Work?

To start the process, your dentist will first examine your mouth and take impressions or X-rays of the area to ensure a bridge is right for you.

Once this is done, the adjacent teeth are filed down to create room for crowns to hold the bridge. The false teeth (or “pontics”) are then attached to the two crowns.

Finally, your dentist will ensure the bridge fits correctly and is comfortable in your mouth. The lifespan of a dental bridge varies depending on the type of bridge, materials used, oral hygiene habits, and individual factors. Your practitioner will discuss realistic expectations at your consultation.

What Are the Benefits of Getting Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge may be considered where one or more teeth are missing. Depending on your clinical situation, a bridge may assist with the following.

Chewing and speech function

Missing teeth can affect the ability to chew certain foods or speak clearly. A bridge replaces the missing tooth structure, which may assist with these functions. Results vary between patients.

Tooth position

When a tooth is lost, adjacent teeth can shift over time. A bridge fills the gap and may reduce the risk of neighbouring teeth drifting out of position. Your practitioner will assess whether this is relevant to your case.

Oral hygiene

Gaps left by missing teeth can make cleaning more difficult in some cases. A bridge may make it easier to maintain consistent oral hygiene, though regular dental reviews remain necessary regardless.

Longevity

With appropriate care and maintenance, a dental bridge can last many years. Lifespan varies depending on the type of bridge, the materials used, oral hygiene habits, and individual factors. Your practitioner will discuss realistic expectations at your consultation.

Dental bridges are not suitable for everyone. A thorough clinical examination is required before any treatment can be recommended.

What Can Dental Bridges Help Treat?

A dental bridge may be considered in the following clinical situations. Suitability depends on individual factors and can only be determined following a clinical examination.

One or more missing teeth

Where a tooth or teeth have been lost, a bridge may be used to fill the gap and support the surrounding teeth. Your practitioner will assess suitability based on the condition of the adjacent teeth and bone structure.

Difficulty chewing

Missing teeth can affect bite function. Depending on the location and extent of tooth loss, a bridge may assist with restoring chewing function. Results vary between patients.

Tooth drift

When a tooth is missing, neighbouring teeth can shift over time. A bridge may help reduce this risk. Your practitioner will advise whether this is relevant to your case.

What Is Our Dental Bridges Treatment Process?

Dental bridge treatment at our Melbourne CBD clinic involves three stages. Your treating practitioner will explain what to expect at each stage, including risks, recovery, and aftercare.

Consultation & Assessment

1. Consultation and assessment

Your practitioner will examine your teeth and jaw structure and may take X-rays or impressions to assess whether a bridge is clinically appropriate. If treatment is recommended, the type of bridge and associated costs will be discussed at this stage.
Teeth Preparation and Temporary Bridge Placement

2. Teeth Preparation and Temporary Bridge Placement

Once we’ve determined that dental bridges are a suitable treatment option, our dentists will prepare the surrounding teeth for the bridge. This involves removing enamel from these teeth to make room for the bridge.

A temporary bridge will be placed following this step to ensure the right fit. This allows us to make any necessary adjustments before fitting the permanent bridge.
Permanent Bridge Placement

3. Permanent bridge placement

Once the permanent bridge is ready, your practitioner will check the fit and make any necessary adjustments before fixing it in place. You will be advised on cleaning, maintenance, and what to monitor after placement.
