When to go to hospital or call 000 instead

Some situations need a hospital rather than a dental chair. Go to your nearest emergency department or call 000 if you have:

bleeding that won't stop after firm, sustained pressure
a head or facial injury with loss of consciousness or a suspected broken jaw
a rapidly spreading infection with a fever

What to do before your emergency appointment

While you arrange to be seen, a few simple steps can help in the meantime.

Knocked-out tooth: pick it up by the crown, not the root, and gently rinse off any dirt. If you can, place it back in the socket; if not, keep it in milk or hold it in your cheek. Get to a dentist as fast as possible, because time really matters here.

Swelling: hold a cold compress against the outside of your cheek to help reduce it. Don't apply heat.

Toothache: rinse with warm salty water and gently floss around the tooth in case food is trapped. Over-the-counter pain relief, used as directed on the packet, can take the edge off.

Bleeding: bite down on a clean piece of gauze or a folded tissue with firm pressure.

These are general holding measures to manage things until you're seen, not a substitute for treatment. What's right for you depends on the specific problem.
