Metal Crowns

Metal crowns are typically made from gold, nickel, chromium, or palladium and are typically used for your back teeth. We offer gold crowns at Gorgeous Smiles, providing incredible durability and strength. We usually install gold crowns in your back teeth, where their strength helps restore natural tooth function and allow you to chew. Unlike other crowns, gold and metal crowns do not require much of your natural tooth structure, allowing us to add dental crowns without you losing any teeth.

To help you see if metal crowns are the right choice for you, we have detailed everything you need to know about them below.

What are the benefits of metal dental crowns?

Metal dental crowns have many benefits, including prolonging the life of natural teeth and restoring chewing function. The benefits you experience might be different depending on your reasons for having a crown, but you can expect to see the following benefits:

They are biocompatible

Gold and high-quality metal alloys are biocompatible, increasing your body's chance of accepting the crown without worrying about side effects. The biocompatibility reduces the chance of an allergic reaction and won't cause teeth near the crown to wear away, giving you a healthier smile.

They are very strong

Metal dental crowns are considered the strongest option, providing you with years of durable and worry-free use. Their strength makes them an excellent option for your back teeth, responsible for most of your chewing function. The added strength here allows you to use your teeth as normal, without worrying about struggling to ite on hard food.

The strength of metal crowns also makes them a great option if you clench or grind your teeth, as they are less likely to chip or break. If you do grind or clench your teeth, we can work with you to address the cause before installing a crown to help preserve your natural teeth.

They last for years

Metal dental crowns have fantastic longevity, lasting longer than porcelain and ceramic crowns. Providing that you care for your metal crowns properly, they can last for over fifteen years! This is due to their incredible durability and resistance to breakage and fractures.

What are the disadvantages of metal dental crowns?

Despite their many benefits, metal dental crowns come with a few disadvantages that you should consider, including their unrealistic colour and the risk of metal allergies. We have detailed the drawbacks you need to consider below:

The crown can be obvious

The colour of metal crowns, especially gold crowns, is different from the colour of natural teeth. The gold color will stand out in your smile, and it can be noticeable when you talk. It is because of this that we recommend metal crowns for the back of your teeth, where they are less noticeable.

There is a chance they will still be spotted, and we ask that you consider carefully whether you want the colour in your smile before proceeding. We can recommend alternative crowns that will provide the same strength as metal crowns while blending in with your natural teeth.

There is a risk of metal allergies

Some patients can have allergies to metals like nickel, which make these crowns unsuitable. Not everyone will know they have a metal allergy or sensitivity until the crown is installed, which can cause an allergic reaction. Before moving forward with a metal dental crown, we must test for allergies to keep you safe.

Metal crowns vs other types of dental crowns

Metal crowns aren't the only type of dental crown that we offer, and you must consider the choice of crown carefully to ensure it is right for you. We offer five other types of dental crowns that you can choose from, including:

  • Porcelain crowns - which can match the colour of your natural teeth and are the most realistic. Porcelain crowns can last for ten years and are easy to maintain

  • Stainless steel crowns - are typically used as temporary solutions and are perfect for children and adults

  • Porcelain fused to metal crowns (PFM) - have a metal core to make them very durable and a porcelain shell that blends the crown to your natural teeth

  • Resin crowns - are made with a durable plastic and are easy to care for

  • Zirconia crowns - are incredibly opaque and better suited for your back teeth, where you can maximise on the durability

Which dental crown is best for me?

The best dental crown for you will depend on the tooth you are covering and any smile goals you have. Metal crowns are most suited to your back teeth, especially if you don't have much natural tooth enamel to work with. Here, a metal crown will restore tooth function, and you don't need to worry too much about its appearance. If you add a crown to your front teeth, a metal crown will look more obvious and won't blend with your natural smile. In these instances, porcelain crowns are a better option, or porcelain fused to metal crowns.

To help you decide which crown is best for you, we have a detailed list of all of our options here. Alternatively, you can book an appointment with one of our dental experts who will discuss your options and help you find the right dental crown.

How much do metal crowns cost?

Metal crowns typically cost $1,200 per tooth, but you can pay up to $2,000 depending on the work required to secure your crown in place. Before we begin with your treatment, we provide you with an accurate cost for your work and guidance on the payment options available.

At Gorgeous Smiles, we know how important it is to achieve your dream smile, so we offer flexible payment plans to help you pay for your dream smile. Our payment plans help you to spread the cost over several months, with interest-free options that help to keep the cost down. What's the metal crown procedure at Gorgeous Smiles?

Our metal crown procedure is similar to our other crown procedures, allowing you to achieve the perfect smile in three easy steps. There might be some differences depending on whether additional dental work is required, but your dentist will inform you before any work begins. You can expect your metal crown procedure to follow the steps below:

1. Initial consultation

Our procedure begins with an initial consultation to discuss your smile goals and see if a metal crown is the right choice for you. We will carry out an oral exam and check your teeth for any issues that need addressing. We will use X-rays to ensure there are no underlying conditions and provide you with a timeline and price for your treatment.

2. Tooth preparation

Before your crown is fitted, we will prepare your tooth, removing any decay or damaged areas. We might lightly shape your tooth too, ensuring it is the perfect fit for your crown. This process can be a little uncomfortable, but we will provide local anesthesia to keep you comfortable. We can add gold crowns even if you don't have much natural tooth structure remaining, allowing you to preserve as many teeth as possible.

When your tooth is prepped, we will get to work on your crown. We can make our metal crowns in-house, using our digital scanners and printers to make your custom-made crown.

3. Crown installation

When your crown is ready, we will fit it, covering your existing tooth and giving you a new smile. The process is quick, and we can use dental cement to adhere it, so you don't need to worry about it coming loose.

After your crown is fitted, we will discuss your aftercare procedure to ensure you can care for your crown as best as possible, extending its lifespan.

Metal crown FAQs

How long do metal crowns last?

Metal crowns typically last for 15 to 20 years, but depending on how you care for them, they can last longer. You will need to maintain your crowns, but many customers have found they have lasted for over 20 years, making them far more durable than porcelain and ceramic crowns.

Do metal crowns look natural?

Metal crowns don't look the most realistic, due to their colour. They are quite obvious in your smile and you will see them when you smile and speak. To minimise this impact on your smile, we only place metal crowns in your back teeth unless you request otherwise.

Are metal crowns safe?

Metal crowns are considered safe, but you need to take care of them if you have any metal sensitivities or allergies. The biocompatibility of metal makes the recovery time shorter and reduces the chances of adverse effects, but you need to consider the possibility of an allergic reaction. If you have reacted negatively to metal before, metal crowns are not considered safe.

Can metal crowns be whitened?

No, metal crowns cannot be whitened. Metal crowns themselves are not often white, and no whitening products will work on them. They will stand out against your natural teeth, so we recommend placing them on your back teeth.

Can metal crowns be used on teeth with tooth decay?

Yes, we can use metal crowns on teeth with tooth decay, restoring natural tooth function. We will try to remove as much of the decay as possible before adding the crown, to keep your tooth healthy. As metal teeth do not need as much natural tooth structure as other crowns, we can remove more decay to give you a healthier smile.

Are metal crowns suitable for front teeth?

As a rule, we do not place metal crowns in front teeth, as they don't blend in well with your natural teeth. Instead, we place them in your back teeth where you can benefit from their added strength and see a restoration of tooth function.
