What's involved in the teeth whitening treatment process?

Our Zoom Philips teeth whitening treatment follows several steps. We also offer take-home whitening options. Below is an overview of the in-chair treatment process. Results vary from person to person.

Teeth whitening consultation & suitability check

Step 1: Teeth whitening consultation & suitability check

Before treatment, you will attend a consultation to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for teeth whitening. Your practitioner will conduct a dental exam and recommend any dental work or cleaning required beforehand. If Zoom whitening is not appropriate for you, alternative options will be discussed. The consultation is an opportunity to ask questions about the procedure, risks, and costs.

Step 2: Preparation & Protection

Before the treatment, your teeth will be prepared and any required dental work completed. If you have not had a professional clean in the last six months, your practitioner may recommend one to remove plaque buildup, which can affect the evenness of the whitening result.

Protective wear is provided during the treatment, including glasses and a bib.

Step 3: Application of Whitening Gel

The whitening gel is applied directly to your teeth. Some patients may experience sensitivity, burning, or tingling during application. If you experience any discomfort, inform your practitioner immediately.
LED Light Activation

Step 4: LED Light Activation

The LED light is switched on and directed at your teeth. The light activates the bleaching agent in the gel, which works to reduce stains and discolouration. The degree of lightening varies from person to person.
Repeat Cycles

Step 5: Repeat Cycles

The activation cycle is repeated several times. How many cycles are needed will vary depending on the level of lightening being attempted. The treatment typically takes one to two hours. The final result depends on individual factors and cannot be guaranteed.
Rinse & Aftercare

Step 6: Rinse & Aftercare

After the treatment, you will be asked to rinse and remove the protective gear. Your dentist will walk you through the aftercare, explain what foods and drinks you should avoid, and schedule your next appointment.

    FAQs about Zoom teeth whitening

    What is Zoom teeth whitening?

Zoom teeth whitening is a professional whitening treatment by Philips. It uses a light-activated bleaching gel to reduce stains and discolouration. Results of up to eight shades lighter have been reported, though individual results vary depending on tooth structure, existing staining, and lifestyle factors. The treatment includes Relief ACP (amorphous calcium phosphate), which is designed to help reduce sensitivity during the procedure. A consultation is recommended to determine whether the treatment is appropriate for you.

    How does Zoom whitening work?

Zoom whitening uses a bleaching gel containing hydrogen peroxide, which is applied to your teeth. When exposed to the Zoom LED light, the gel breaks down stains on the tooth surface. Results of up to eight shades lighter have been reported, though individual outcomes vary. The gel can also be used at home with custom trays; without the LED light, the lightening effect is more gradual. A consultation is recommended before proceeding.

How much does Zoom teeth whitening cost in Melbourne?

Zoom teeth whitening at our clinic costs between $350 and $795, depending on the treatment type.* Take-home kits start from $350, in-chair whitening from $450, and combined packages including a check-up, clean, and whitening are available at $595. A consultation is needed to confirm which option is appropriate and to provide accurate pricing.

*Additional costs may apply if dental work is needed before whitening. The final cost depends on your individual treatment plan.

How long does the Zoom whitening procedure take?

The Zoom teeth whitening procedure will typically take between one and two hours. The time it takes will depend on the shade you are trying to achieve and the colour of your current teeth. During a consultation, your dentist will provide you with an estimated time frame to help you understand how long the treatment will last.

    Is Zoom teeth whitening safe?

Zoom teeth whitening has FDA approval and is performed by a dental professional. Side effects may include tooth sensitivity and gum irritation, which are common and typically short-term. Your practitioner will assess your suitability and explain the risks before treatment. For full information on risks, see our treatment risks page.

Does Zoom teeth whitening hurt or cause sensitivity?

Zoom teeth whitening can cause temporary sensitivity. The hydrogen peroxide used in the whitening gel can irritate nerve endings, increasing tooth sensitivity, but this should subside after a few days. The teeth whitening procedure does not hurt, but you can experience mild discomfort during the treatment. This will subside after the treatment, and your dentist can use a local anesthetic to reduce any discomfort during the treatment if necessary.

How long do Zoom whitening results last?

Zoom whitening results typically last several months to two years, depending on diet, oral hygiene, and lifestyle factors such as smoking and consumption of staining foods and drinks. Whitening is not permanent. Results will fade over time, and top-up treatments may be needed. Regular dental appointments and good oral hygiene can help maintain results for longer.

What should I avoid after Zoom whitening treatment?

Initially, after your Zoom teeth whitening treatment, you should avoid acidic and dark-pigmented foods and beverages. You should avoid these for 48 hours to prevent any staining or irritation. Foods and drinks like berries, dark sauces, coffee, and red wine should be avoided. You should also watch sugary foods like cakes and cookies as these can also stain and irrate your teeth.

After a Zoom whitening treatment, we will walk you through how best to care for your teeth to prevent whitening. We provide detailed aftercare guidance to help you care for your new, brighter smile.

Can everyone get Zoom teeth whitening?

Zoom teeth whitening is not suitable for everyone. Certain criteria you must meet include being free from tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues. Typically, you need to be over 18 for the whitening treatment too and it is not recommeneded for pregnant or breastfeeding people.

We also don't recommend that anyone with sensitive teeth have the treatment, as it can worsen their treatment progress. If you have sensitive teeth or aren't sure if you qualify, book a consultation with a dentist to see if you are a suitable candidate.

Does Medicare cover Zoom teeth whitening?

Medicare does not cover Zoom teeth whitening. Zoom teeth whitening is considered a cosmetic procedure rather than a medically necessary one. Medicare or other dental insurance plans will not cover it, and you will have to pay for your Zoom teeth whitening treatment yourself. You can access payment plans for our teeth whitening treatments to spread the cost. Learn more about our payment plans to see which option is right for you.

What’s the difference between Zoom teeth whitening and take-home whitening kits?

The difference between the Zoom teeth whitening and take-home whitening kits is that a dentist performs Zoom teeth whitening, and the take-home whitening kits are done yourself. The Zoom whitening is done using an LED light that activates bleaching agents in whitening gel to instantly brighten your teeth. Hydrogen peroxide is typically used to brighten your teeth by up to eight shades. At home whitening kits won't be as strong, as legally, hydrogen peroxide cannot be distributed to the public in large quantities. At-home whitening will typically be done by yourself on a weekly basis and will gradually whiten your teeth over time.
