Can Veneers Fix Gaps Between Teeth?

Do you have gaps between your teeth and want to know if veneers can fix them? Dental veneers are used to treat many cosmetic concerns, whether you want a straighter or whiter smile, but will they fill any gaps between your teeth? Our guide today has the answers for you as we walk you through the veneer process and how they can help fill teeth gaps.

Types of dental veneers

You can choose from two popular types of veneers to address any cosmetic issues. These veneers will sit over your natural teeth, allowing you to achieve your perfect smile. Let's take a closer look at these types of veneers available.

Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are a popular option. Also known as traditional veneers, porcelain veneers cover the front of your teeth helping to fill gaps, brighten your smile, and straighten crooked teeth.

Porcelain veneers require filing your teeth and removing a layer of your enamel to help the veneers to bond to your teeth. These veneers are expensive, but can last for ten years or longer, depending how well you care for them.

Composite veneers

A cheaper alternative is composite veneers, a thin resin applied directly to your teeth. Composite veneers require less preparation time, as there is only a light file needed. Instead of custom veneers being made, a thin resin is applied directly to your teeth and sculpted to create your new smile. We cure and polish the resin, making them as hard as natural teeth to give you years of realistic use. On average, composite veneers can last for five to seven years.

Can veneers fix gaps between my teeth?

Veneers are a great way to fix gaps between your teeth. We can use veneers to fill small or moderate gaps, giving you a new smile. It's a fantastic choice if you have a few gaps, as we can add veneers to entire sections of teeth, matching them with the rest of your smile.

Veneers are suitable for smaller gaps, but cannot fill the gap of a missing teeth, as they need a tooth to adhere too. In cases where you have missing teeth, dental implants are a better choice. During our consultation, we will discuss your smile goals and find the best method that suits your teeth.

Veneer placement process

Placing veneers to fix gaps in your teeth follows five steps that change your smile. Porcelain veneers are usually used to fix gaps between teeth, although for small gaps, composite veneers might also be used. We will walk you through the placement process for both of these so you know what to expect every step of the way.

Step 1 - Initial consultation

We start with a consultation where we will discuss your smile goals and carry out an examination to see if veneers are the right choice for you. Where needed, we will perform any scans and take impressions of your teeth, which we will use to create your custom, porcelain veneers.

The consultation is the perfect opportunity for you to ask any questions and make any suggestions on what you want your new smile to look like.

Step 2 - Tooth prep

Before your veneers can be placed, we need to prepare your teeth. Porcelain veneers are often used for fixing gaps, where your teeth are filed and some of the enamel removed. This can be uncomfortable, but a local anesthetic is offered to keep you pain-free.

Your teeth are filed for composite veneers, too, giving the resin something to attach to. The filing isn't as extensive as filing for porcelain veneers, but you might find it a little uncomfortable.

Step 3 - Temporary veneers

With porcelain veneers, temporary veneers are added to your filed teeth while you wait for your permanent veneers to be made. Depending on how quickly your veneers are made, you might get to skip this step or not have the temporary veneers for long. The temporary veneers will allow you to use your teeth as normal, ensuring you can eat and drink without any discomfort.

Temporary veneers are not required with composite resin veneers, as we can sculpt these ourselves directly onto your teeth. You will skip this step and usually have your veneers installed at the same time we file your teeth.

Step 4 - Veneer placement

When your veneers are ready, we will invite you back for another appointment. We will remove your temporary veneers and bond the porcelain veneers to your teeth, creating your new smile.

Composite veneers are attached differently, helping us to fill in small gaps. We apply a thin resin directly to your teeth and sculpting it to create your new smile. This allows us to cover any small gaps between teeth and chips. The composite is cured with a light and polished to make it feel like your natural teeth.

Step 5 - Aftercare

Once your veneers are installed, there isn't too much aftercare for you to worry about. The veneers can be cared for like real teeth, brushing and flossing them daily to ensure you remove food particles and prevent any plaque buildup. We also recommend that you attend regular dental appointments, ensuring that you have good oral health and hygiene.

How much does it cost to have veneers fix gaps between teeth?

The cost of using veneers to fix gaps between your teeth varies depending on the type of veneer material you choose. Veneers are usually charged per tooth, too, so you need to consider how many veneers will be needed to fill the gaps. Typically, a veneer can cost:

  • $1,500 to $2,500 per porcelain veneer

  • $300 to $600 per composite veneer

During your consultation, we will provide an accurate cost for your veneers. We will also discuss your payment options, where you can choose to pay upfront or spread the cost to help you fit your new smile into your budget.

What are the advantages of using veneers to fix gaps?

Using veneers to fix gaps between teeth has several advantages, including the customisation and versatility. We have details on our favourite advantages of the procedure below:

You can customise them

We can customise veneers to create the perfect smile for your face. We can colour-match veneers to match your natural teeth or brighten them if you want a white smile. We can also adjust the shape and size of veneers, helping to close gaps and address any other dental concerns.

When we take impressions of your smile, we can use this to create the perfect smile for your face and provide you with the opportunity to share any concerns or suggestions.

They are minimally invasive

Compared to other options, veneers are minimally invasive. You can retain most of your tooth structure while changing its cosmetic appearance, filling in any gaps and straightening your smile.

You do not need general anesthetic for your veneers and most patients do not experience any pain while their teeth are filed or the veneers placed.

They are versatile

Veneers are incredibly versatile and can be used to fix several dental concerns at the same time. Closing gaps, straightening your smile, brightening your teeth, and even re-shaping misshapen teeth can be achieved with your veneers.

During your consultation, you can see how many concerns can be addressed with veneers, giving you your dream smile.

How do I qualify for veneers to fix gaps between my teeth?

You need healthy gums with no sign of disease to qualify for veneers. We ask that you have healthy teeth, too, with plenty of enamel so that we do not damage your natural tooth when filing the enamel down to attach the veneers. We generally do not install veneers on anyone with thin layers of enamel, but we can discuss other options to help create your dream smile.

We recommend veneers for small or moderate gaps. For large gaps or missing teeth, aligners or dental implants would be a better option for you. The same applies to addressing bite issues. While the veneers can help to fix the gaps, it would be better to address your bite issues before focusing on the cosmetic dentistry of filling gaps.

Don't worry if you aren't sure whether you qualify for veneers; we will assess your oral health during a consultation and see if it is the right choice for you.
