Invisalign treatment can be applied to the bottom teeth only in some cases. This is known as single-arch treatment. This page explains how Invisalign works for bottom teeth, what to consider, and tips for getting the most from your treatment.

What Is Invisalign and How Does It Work for Bottom Teeth?

Invisalign uses custom-made clear plastic aligners that fit over the teeth and gradually move them into the planned position. Single-arch Invisalign treatment focuses on the bottom teeth only, without treating the upper teeth.

Treatment involves a series of aligners that are changed every two weeks. Each new set of aligners applies slightly different pressure, moving the teeth incrementally. Aligners are removable for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing.

Important: Single-arch treatment is not appropriate for all cases. Treating the bottom teeth only can sometimes affect how the upper and lower teeth fit together (the bite). Your dentist will assess whether single-arch treatment is clinically appropriate or whether both arches need to be treated.

Characteristics of Invisalign for Bottom Teeth

Discreet appearance: Invisalign aligners are clear and less visible than metal braces.

Removable for cleaning: Aligners are removed for brushing and flossing, which can make maintaining oral hygiene easier than with fixed braces.

Addresses minor alignment issues: Single-arch Invisalign is generally used for mild to moderate concerns such as slight crowding, minor gaps, or minor alignment issues on the bottom teeth.

Treatment duration: Treatment duration depends on the amount of tooth movement required. Single-arch treatment for mild issues may take less time than full-mouth treatment, though the exact timeframe varies by case. Your dentist will provide an estimated timeframe at your consultation.

Tips for Getting the Most from Invisalign Treatment

Wear your aligners consistently: Aligners should be worn for at least 22 hours per day as directed by your dentist. Inconsistent wear can slow progress and extend treatment time.

Clean your aligners regularly: Brush and rinse your aligners twice daily with mild soap and lukewarm water to prevent bacteria buildup.

Brush and floss daily: Maintain your regular oral hygiene routine. Brush and floss before reinserting your aligners after meals.

Follow your treatment plan: Stick to the schedule your dentist has set for changing aligners. Deviating from the plan can affect the outcome.

Wear retainers after treatment: After completing Invisalign treatment, retainers must be worn as directed by your dentist to maintain tooth position. Without retainer wear, teeth may shift back toward their original position. Your dentist will advise on the appropriate retainer schedule.

Risks of Invisalign Treatment

All orthodontic treatments carry risks. Risks of Invisalign treatment include discomfort and pressure when new aligners are placed; tooth root resorption (shortening of the tooth roots); enamel wear at attachment sites; gum irritation from aligner edges; temporary speech changes; the possibility that treatment may take longer than estimated or may not fully achieve the planned outcome; bite changes, particularly with single-arch treatment where treating one arch may affect how the upper and lower teeth meet; and relapse (teeth shifting back) if retainers are not worn as directed.

Your dentist will assess whether single-arch treatment is appropriate for your case and discuss all risks before treatment begins.

Book a Consultation

If you're considering Invisalign for your bottom teeth, a consultation is the appropriate starting point. Your dentist will assess your teeth and bite, determine whether single-arch treatment is clinically appropriate, provide a treatment plan with costs, and discuss all risks involved.
