Dental Bonding Vs Veneers

Deciding on the best treatment to create your new smile can be tricky, especially if you have never had cosmetic dental work before. Do you risk being disappointed and thousands of dollars out of pocket, or do you begrudgingly put up with your smile? Well, what if we told you there was another option?

With our guide today, you can explore to popular options, dental bonding and veneers, to see which is the right choice for you and your smile.

What We Are Going To Cover:

Dental Bonding Vs Veneers: Treatment Approach

There is some overlap with the treatment approach for dental bonding and composite veneers. Both use a thin resin to change the appearance of your teeth, perfect for covering cracks, filling small gaps, and giving your teeth a straighter appearance. You have more choices with veneers than dental bonding, opting for porcelain, composite, and no-prep veneers.

Dental Bonding Treatment Approach

Dental bonding, or composite dental bonding, involves a resin being directly applied to your teeth, helping to fill gaps and repair chips, cracks, and any other concerns you might have. The treatment can be completed in one visit, following these steps:

  1. Your dentist will examine your teeth and check that dental bonding is the correct approach, determining what you want the final result to look like.
  2. Next, the surface of your tooth will be etched slightly to help the bonding material stick to it. This can be a little uncomfortable.
  3. The resin is applied directly to your tooth and shaped to match the contours of your tooth, filling in any gaps or cracks.
  4. Your dentist will use a UV light to harden the resin once it is shaped to your desired results.
  5. To finish, we polish the tooth, creating a natural finish that matches your existing teeth.

Veneers Treatment Approach

Veneer treatment varies slightly depending on the type of veneers you choose. We offer porcelain veneers, composite resin veneers, and no-prep veneers. We have outlined the approach for each type of veneer below:

Porcelain Veneers

  1. First, we assess your smile to ensure porcelain veneers are the right option. We can use our digital scanners and 3D printers to show you how your new smile will look and allow you to suggest any changes.
  2. Next, we fit you with temporary veneers, sitting over the top of your natural teeth.
  3. When your veneers are ready, we invite you back to remove the temporary veneers and fit your permanent ones. We start by filing your teeth and removing the enamel to make room for your veneers.
  4. Your veneers are bonded using a dental adhesive, which is cementing them in place.

Composite Resin Veneers

  1. We start with a consultation to ensure you are a suitable candidate for composite veneers, taking x-rays and scans of your mouth to help us create the perfect veneers for your face.
  2. Your teeth are etched with a small drill to help the resin bond to your teeth. This can be a little uncomfortable, and local anesthetics can be offered.
  3. The resin is applied directly to your teeth. We work with thin layers, sculpting it to create your new smile.
  4. A UV curing light is used to harden the resin and we finish by polishing it to help it match your natural teeth.

No-Prep Veneers

  1. We start with a consultation where we check if you are a good candidate for no-prep veneers. We will take impressions of your teeth to create your veneers.
  2. Once ready, your veneers are applied directly to your teeth. In some cases, we might lightly score or etch the surface of your teeth to ensure a secure fit.

Dental Bonding Vs Veeners: Treatment Duration

Dental bonding is a quicker treatment than veneers, but you can have veneers fitted in one sitting, depending on the method you choose. Composite and no-prep veneers can be fitted in one appointment, but for porcelain veneers, which do last longer, you will need a few separate appointments for the treatment to be completed.

Dental Bonding Treatment Duration

Dental bonding is a relatively quick treatment and can be completed in one appointment! This makes it an excellent option if you are looking for a fast solution to your smile concerns. You might need to have your consultation first before returning for the resin to be applied, but this will depend on how busy we are. Learn more about dental bonding treatment here.

Veneers Treatment Duration

How long dental veneer treatment takes varies depending on the type of veneer you choose. For no-prep veneers, these can be fitted quickly and you don't usually need to return for another appointment to have them installed. Composite resin veneers can also be applied in one appointment, making this another fast treatment option. Porcelain veneers do require a longer treatment time, as your veneers are custom-made before being fitted. We don't leave you with filed teeth and no veneers, though, as we offer temporary veneers that sit over tooth enamel to help you visualise your new and permanent smile.

Dental Bonding Vs Veneers: Technological Features

We use a variety of technological features in dental bonding and veneers to help you achieve your perfect smile. We do include a wider range of technology in our veneer treatment, but this is partly because it requires more technology than dental bonding.

Dental Bonding Technological Features

We use a few technological features during our dental bonding treatment to help create your new smile, which we have outlined below:

  • UV light - Ensures that your composite bonding is cured to keep it in place for years without changes to its shape or thickness
  • Colour match technology - Helps to match your composite resin perfectly to your teeth to ensure that the bonding matches your natural teeth
  • Precise polishing - Our polisher helps to create a smooth surface of resin on your teeth that shines and performs like a natural tooth, allowing you to enjoy full use of your teeth

Veneers Technological Features

A few technological features are used with veneers to create your dream smile. We have outlined the key elements below:

  • Digital Scanning And 3D Printing - Provides us with a comprehensive view of your mouth and a smile that is perfect for your face
  • Colour Precision - Matches your veneers to your tooth colour, seamlessly blending the two. Whitening can be offered beforehand should you wish to brighten your smile
  • Thin Porcelain - Allows us to create your dream smile without your veneers seeming too big for your mouth, giving you a natural smile compared to other veneer treatments

Dental Bonding Vs Veneers: Cost

Dental bonding tends to be a cheaper option than porcelain veneers. Composite veneers cost the same as dental bonding, but the cost of all of these treatments does vary depending on how many teeth you are addressing and how complex the issues are. We know that dental work can be expensive, but we believe everyone deserves their dream smile, which is why we offer several payment plans that make your new smile more accessible.

Dental Bonding Cost

The cost of dental bonding does vary, depending on how many teeth we are applying the composite bonding to and how much work is required to fill gaps and change the shape of your tooth. On average, you are looking at a cost of $250 to $850 per tooth. We do offer some payment plans, where you can spread the cost of your treatment over several months or a discount if you pay in full upfront. You can learn more about our payment plans here and the interest-free options we can offer.

Veneers Cost

Veneers can be expensivn, costing between $1,500 and $2,500 per tooth for porcelain veneers. Composite veneers can be cheaper, costing around $750 per tooth, but the cost of both treatments will vary, depending on your existing teeth and the smile you wish to create. We offer dental payment plans for our veneer treatment, where you can spread the cost of your treatment over a year or two if needed. We offer full guidance on these payment plans here and how you can apply for them.

Most patients found the process pain-free, but they did experience some discomfort while their teeth were being etched. The light filing can cause some discomfort, but this will not last for long. To help you learn more about our customer experience, we have a list of fantastic client testimonials and before and after pictures of our dental bonding.

Veneers Customer Experience

Overall, customers were pleased with their veneer treatment. While they found the filing uncomfortable, many did not experience any pain and were happy to receive a local anesthetic to keep them comfortable. Customers praised the consultation process, too, where they got to hear about all the veneer options and see how their new smile would look before moving forward. We will also support you after the bonding, helping you navigate aftercare and ensuring that your new teeth are well cared for.

Veneers Customer Support

You are supported by our team of experts from the beginning of your veneer journey. We will help you create your perfect smile in your consultation, answering any questions you have, and will be on hand to answer any further questions as your treatment progresses. We continue to support you after your veneers are applied, too, with regular checkups and follow-up appointments to ensure your smile is well looked after.

Dental Bonding Vs Veneers: Aftercare

Dental bonding and veneers require little aftercare, making them easy for you to care for. You will need to care more with dental bonding, as the resin is not as strong as porcelain veneers. This means biting or chewing on hard objects, like pens, packets, or very crunchy ,food can damage the bonding. You would need to have the bonding repaired or replaced if it cracks or chips, adding to the overall cost of your treatment.

Dental Bonding Aftercare

After your dental bonding is complete, you must take care of your teeth like you would your natural teeth. This involves brushing and flossing regularly to ensure there are no food particles remaining or plaque buildup. You should see a dentist regularly for checkups, too, to keep your new smile healthy. You will need to take care when eating and should avoid biting and chewing hard objects, as these can damage your bonding. You also cannot whiten your bonding after it has been applied. You would need to have the bonding redone or undergo professional teeth whitening before your bonding is applied. Check out our dental bonding after care guide for more information.

Veneers Aftercare

After your veneers are applied, you can continue as normal. They should be cared for like your other teeth, with regular brushing and flossing. We recommend attending regular dental appointments, too so that we can check your veneers are functioning properly and that you are maintaining good oral health. Your porcelain veneers will function as normal teeth, but composite veneers aren't as strong, and you will need to take care when biting into hard objects as this can damage them. After your veneers are applied, we recommend that you avoid using your mouth to open packets, as this can damage your veneers. Check out our veneers after care guide for more information.
